Background of the Study

Cybersecurity threats are a growing concern for businesses worldwide, with small and medium enterprises (SMEs) being particularly vulnerable due to limited resources and expertise. Threats such as phishing, ransomware, and data breaches pose significant risks to business continuity and customer trust (Ezekiel & Umar, 2023).

In Taraba State, the proliferation of digital tools among SMEs has heightened their exposure to cyber threats. Despite the increasing reliance on digital platforms, many SMEs lack robust cybersecurity measures, leaving them susceptible to attacks.

This study investigates the nature and impact of cybersecurity threats on SMEs in Taraba State, aiming to develop strategies for enhanced security.

Statement of the Problem

SMEs in Taraba State face a high risk of cybersecurity threats due to inadequate defenses, limited awareness, and evolving attack techniques. These challenges result in financial losses, reputational damage, and disruptions to business operations.

The lack of focused research on the specific threats faced by SMEs in Taraba State and their mitigation strategies further exacerbates the problem. This study seeks to address these gaps and provide actionable recommendations.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify common cybersecurity threats faced by SMEs in Taraba State.

2. To assess the impact of these threats on business operations and customer trust.

3. To propose effective cybersecurity strategies for SMEs in Taraba State.

Research Questions

1. What are the common cybersecurity threats faced by SMEs in Taraba State?

2. How do these threats impact business operations and customer trust?

3. What strategies can SMEs adopt to mitigate cybersecurity threats?

Research Hypotheses

1. SMEs in Taraba State do not face significant cybersecurity threats.

2. Cybersecurity threats do not significantly impact business operations and customer trust.

3. Mitigation strategies have no significant effect on reducing cybersecurity threats.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on SMEs in Taraba State, analyzing the cybersecurity threats they face and exploring mitigation strategies. Limitations include the variability of cybersecurity maturity across businesses and the reluctance to disclose sensitive security information.

Definitions of Terms

• Cybersecurity Threats: Malicious activities aimed at compromising the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of digital assets.

• Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Businesses with limited capital, staff, and operations compared to larger enterprises.
